A total of 36 wolves will be allowed to be killed, in six administrative areas. The hunt will continue until February 15.
The County Boards (Länsstyrelserna) of Mid and Southern Sweden have decided the number of wolves allowed for licensed hunt. Northern Sweden will not allow any wolf hunt in 2024, as the number of wolves there barely reach the minimum level allowed.
What is the situation for the Swedish wolves?
There is an official minimum level set at 300 wolves, in order to keep a long term sustainable population. During 2023 the wolf population decreased from 460 to 450 wolves according to Maj Widell at Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket). Earlier this year, the Swedish government has stated that they want to half the Swedish wolf population.
